It’s being reported that more than 3,000 licensed firearm holders have not yet responded to the amnesty declared by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA), commencing in June.
More than 1,200 licensed guns have been inspected under the amnesty.
The FLA says, with assistance from the police, it is going house-to-house to find the guns and the holders. At the same time, it says the individuals can still go in and present their firearms.
Under the initiative, licensed firearm holders are being encouraged to take their guns to the FLA to have them inspected and obtain certification without fear. They have been advised to take their guns to the FLA to have them inspected and obtain certification without fear of prosecution.
The agency says the compliance drive was implemented to ensure that it could account for all firearms and the whereabouts of their licensed holders.
According to the FLA, many of the guns, which were issued by the police before the agency was created, were ballistic tested for the first time.
The agency will be digitising the records and contacting the firearm holders immediately after the date for renewal passes. In addition, it will be implementing fingerprint and facial recognition machines at all its locations to prevent persons with criminal records and dual identities from obtaining guns.
In the meantime, $17 million has been collected since the FLA amnesty started. The agency says funds generated from the amnesty will be used to implement its digitization. Some of the money will be used to improve the technological infrastructure of the Authority.
