6 MONTHS FOR STEALING RUM

Jailbreak

A man accused of stealing two bottles of rum from a supermarket was sentenced to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Barry Ferguson, a 54-year-old from Mountain View Avenue in Kingston, pleaded guilty to simple larceny.

Allegations are that at approximately 8:55 pm on May 8, the accused entered the supermarket and went to the liquor aisle.

The complainant was reportedly observing him on a security monitor.

It is further alleged that he took two bottles of 75 milliliter white overproof rum and left the supermarket without paying.

The security guard was alerted and the accused man ran.

He was, however, caught and taken to the supermarket and the police summoned.

How many times you getting in this sort of thing?” Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked.

“2003 or 2004,” he replied.

A family member who was present in court informed the magistrate that Ferguson is a substance abuser and that his relatives were trying to get him enrolled in a rehabilitation programme.

Pusey told the family member that that could be done after the sentence.

He was subsequently sentenced and a fingerprint order made.
