President Robert Mugabe’s government has been forced to respond to a video clip making the rounds on social media which appears to show the president dozing during a press conference.
The information minister says Mugabe was actually nodding his head in agreement with a point made by the Japanese premier in a meeting earlier this week.
In a statement, information minister Christopher Mushohwe says the story damages President Mugabe’s reputation in a big way.
The video clip appears to show Mugabe closing his eyes during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe this week.
Mushohwe says that claims Mugabe was nodding off are spiteful and actually he was nodding his head in agreement with Abe.
The Zimbabwe government is sensitive to stories that imply the 92-year-old Mugabe may not be fit for his job, after he stumbled twice in public last year.
