The Ministry of Education will be examining special private schools catering to children with disabilities.
This is to ensure that students are, among other things, being taught state recognized curricula.
Speaking at Friday morning’s sitting of the Senate, Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid admitted that the education system in Jamaica has not been inclusive of children with disabilities.
He added that in many cases, special needs institutions do not receive government support.
“We now have to look at these private special schools and make sure that government works with them with a proper arrangement to provide very structured government support because it can’t be that the most poor and the most vulnerable in our society, that the government is not reaching out, not showing the care and love,” he asserted.
According to the minister, about 10 per cent of the Jamaican population is within the special needs band.
Dat good still.
