Couple found guilty of the murder of UWI lecturer
NEARLY 10 years after the death of university lecturer Dr Peter Vogel, a jury yesterday found his former live-in helper, Yanika Scott, 31, and her boyfriend, Kelvin Downer, 29, guilty of murder.
Following deliberations for close to three hours, the unanimous verdict was announced in a Corporate Area court.
Vogel, a Swiss national who lectured at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, was found dead at his Corporate Area home on July 19, 2007.
His body was found by his six-year-old son.
According to police reports, Vogel’s hands were tied behind his back, his feet were bound and his mouth tied with a piece of cloth.
Police investigations led to the arrest of Downer over a year later in November 2008, while Scott, who changed her name to Kamesha Lecky, was arrested in 2012.
During the trial, the pathologist told the court that Vogel was strangled.
The prosecutors told the court that he was killed just four months after Scott was hired.
Scott and Downer will be sentenced on July 28.

Naw. Most likely he is responsible for the tying and strangulation. I think the story was that the male wanted a loan from her employer but was denied and decided to commit this act. I feel this was mostly his doing. Grateful the child lived.
