THREE KENYAN MEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR STRIPPING WOMAN WHO DRESSED PROVOCATIVELY

Three men –Edward Gitau, Nicholas Mwangi and Meshak Mwangi — have been sentenced to death for stripping and s*xually assaulting a woman they believed was dressed too provocatively.

The incident happened in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

The three men, however, had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonments because Kenya’s ban on carrying out executions means the trio will spend the rest of their lives in jail.

The female victim was attacked at a petrol station on the outskirts of Nairobi in 2014, during which she was stripped, s*xually assaulted and her phone and cash stolen by a violent mob, ostensibly because she was wearing a mini skirt which her attackers deemed ‘provocative.’

The incident was captured on camera and widely circulated on social media.

The verdict capped a case that prompted hundreds of people to march through the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, in short, fitted clothing in 2014, calling for an end to violence against women after a video of the attack was made public.

“This is what many uncultured men do out there,” he added.

It was part of a rash of assaults against women; and it led activists to mobilise under the hash tag #MyDressMyChoice to demonstrate.
