POLICEMAN FREED OF RAPE CHARGE

A police constable who was charged six years ago with raping a woman was freed on Friday.

It was alleged that the incident took place while the cop was on patrol duty.

Prosecutors on Friday conceded the case after the alleged victim decided not to pursue the matter.

Constable Sheldon Taylor was ordered released by the presiding judge in the St. Catherine Circuit Court.

The Constable was charged in 2011 following allegations that he raped an exotic dancer at a nightclub in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

It was reported that on February 17, 2011, the constable and five other policemen raided the club at Dam Head.

While carrying out the operation, it was alleged that he raped one of the dancers at the club.

When the matter came up for hearing Friday, prosecutors reported that the complainant had migrated and told them that she did not wish to pursue the matter.

Defence attorney Peter Champagnie told the court that while his client is relieved that the matter has ended, he maintained that he did not commit the offence.
