Wanted man shot dead after attacking police with machete
A St. Elizabeth man who was wanted for questioning in connection with murder and failing to report on charges of rape, abduction and grievious sexual assault was fatally shot Tuesday morning after he allegedly attacked the police with a machete.
He has been identified as Dwight Ian Stephen of Banton Town in Southfield, St. Elizabeth.
It is reported that the police went to Banton Town to execute warrants on Mr. Stephen who was wanted for questioning in connection with the death of his former girlfriend 32 year old bartender Shanna Esson of Malvern in the parish.
It is alleged that Mr. Stephen attacked members of the police team with a machete and was shot.
He was pronounced dead at Black River Hospital.
It was reported that about 9:30 on the night of February 26, Mr. Stephen went to Miss Esson’s workplace and doused her with a corrosive substance before setting her ablaze.
Miss Esson succumbed to her injuries on March 16.
Mr. Stephen fled the area.
He had been out on bail on charges of rape, abduction and grievous sexual assault which were before the St. Elizabeth Circuit Court.
