A policeman has been hospitalised along with a man, who is nursing gunshot wounds, following an altercation between the two at the Criminal Records Office (CRO) today.
The constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) said the man, who was a customer of the CRO, turned up at the office sometime after midday to collect two reports — one for himself and another for a connected party.
However, when denied one of the reports, the man became boisterous and verbally abusive, the police said
“When it became clear that he could not be calmed down, he was escorted from the premises by the staff.
“Hours later, the man returned and physically attacked a constable on duty at the office. After being assaulted multiple times, the constable was forced to take evasive action, during which he fired one round from his service firearm, hitting his attacker,” CCU reported.
The man and the constable were taken to nearby hospitals where they are being treated for their injuries. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the matter.
CCU said today’s incident has not impacted operations at the CRO and the office continues to process applications and issue certificates with normal office hours.
