Police were called to Bertie’s West Indian and American restaurant on Monday night after a game of cards went south when one of the players pulled a gun and fired off a shot, according to police.
Robert “Briggy” Russell, 62, suspected that someone had stolen his wallet during the card game, left the restaurant, then returned armed with a pistol, police said.
Officers were called to the North Main Street eatery at about 11:30 p.m. after the reported gunfire. Police say the establishment was closed, but they found card players inside.
Police said they discovered that before their arrival, Russell had fired off the shot into a wall, sending the card players scattering for the exit.
Russell then grabbed cash off the card table, then walked out, climbed into a black BMW and drove away, police said. No one was injured in the gunfire, according to police.
Police found that BMW, as well as Russell, at 272 Hill Street a short time later.
Officers also found a loaded handgun on the south side of the building during their investigation.
Police charged Russell with first-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal transfer of a pistol and altering a serial number on a firearm.
Russell was held on a $250,000 bond.
