CHUCKY BROWN SEH HIM NEVA INA NO DEATH SQUAD

Chucky” Brown denies involvement in police death squad

Constable Collis Chucky Brown on Monday morning denied being a member of a police death squad involved in killing criminal suspects in Clarendon.

He was presenting his defence at the death squad murder trial.

In an unsworn statement before the jury, Constable Brown denied the 2009 killing of Demoy Gutty Dawkins and the extra-judicial killing of Dwayne Douglas and Andrew Fearon along the Swansea main road in 2012.

Prosecutors have accused him of killing the men during the operation of the death squad.

Constable Brown testified that from 2009 to 2012 he was a member of a street crime unit in Clarendon.

He said as a constable he was obliged to take directives from his superiors.

He said the function of the street crime unit was to combat rising crime in Clarendon and confront criminals.

He said in 2012, there was a shooting at May Pen Hospital where Adiff Washington was killed.

Constable Brown said he was accused by the Jamaica Constabulary Force of the killing.

As a result of the accusation, Constable Brown said he went to a human rights organisation because he was concerned about the safety of his son and his wife, who worked at May Pen Hospital.

He said his wife had been threatened and had confrontations with a co-worker following the murder of the patient.

The constable said he spoke with a former Police Commissioner and was later introduced to investigators from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).

The policeman said he had discussions with the INDECOM investigators about the safety of his family and the possibility of relocating them overseas.

He said during his dealings with INDECOM, he was given devices to record incriminating conversations between him and his co-workers as well as commanders.

Constable Brown told the jury, “Things were said…” during his meetings with the INDECOM investigators.

The cop said he was arrested and charged in January 2014 when he failed to produce the incriminating evidence from the secret recordings.

He maintained that he was not involved in the drive-by shooting of Dawkins and that Douglas and Fearon were killed in a shootout with the police.

Constable Brown also denied allegations that he worked for a drug don in Manchester.
