JAMAICAN CARETAKERS ACCUSED OF ROBBING DEAD PATIENT OF 1.4M

Caretakers stole $1.4 million from woman without sharing news of her death, cops say

Though Florence Weiner’s March 2016 death ended Angella Morrison and AnnaKay Johnson’s jobs as caretakers, it proved more windfall than hardship, according to Fort Lauderdale police.

A lawsuit from Tina Kaufman, Weiner’s New Jersey-based daughter, says they had time to drain her mother’s estate because Morrison never let Kaufman know her dementia-suffering mother had died. Morrison withdrew $1,432,724 over five withdrawals from Kaufman’s bank account and over 50 pieces of jewelry, loot she shared with Johnson, their probable cause affidavits say.

Kaufman’s lawsuit says she found out in August 2016, five months later, when Weiner’s condominium sent her a bill for unpaid fees.

Since their March arrests, Morrison, 54, and Johnson, 29, have legal troubles beyond the lawsuit from Weiner’s only living immediate family.

Morrison is out of jail after posting $51,000 bond on one count of exploitation of the elderly over $100,000, one count of grand theft, three counts of false ownership in pawning an item, and three counts of dealing in stolen property. Johnson posted $34,000 bond to the same charges, but only two counts each for false ownership in pawning an item and dealing in stolen property.

Kaufman’s suit says her mother’s physical and mental decline began in 2012 after the sudden death of husband, Seymour Weiner, followed by a heart attack and cardiac bypass surgery. When continual trips from New Jersey became impractical, she hired Morrison as a caretaker. Morrison brought on Johnson to help with Weiner’s care.

A search of medial professional licenses on the Department of Health’s website turns up neither Morrison nor Johnson as a licensed professional.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Weiner’s 2013 diagnosis of dementia was soon followed by Morrison and Johnson receiving “large pay increases” and, later, bonus checks up to $10,000. Morrison bought a Fort Lauderdale home in the 5900 block of Northeast 21st Circle for $400,000 in 2014. Kaufman’s suit claimed the closing cash came from money Morrison was stealing from her mother.

The suit claims Morrison took advantage of Weiner’s dementia to get Weiner to add her to bank accounts and give her access to safe deposit boxes all while keeping Kaufman from talking to Weiner, and “otherwise engaged in elder abuse.”

After Weiner’s death, the suit says, Morrison repeatedly told Kaufman that Weiner was unavailable to talk. The probable cause affidavits say Morrison took the $1.4 million on April 18, 2016, then pawned 50 pieces of jewelry at a Fort Lauderdale Payless Pawn in July. She also gave Johnson money toward buying the $328,000 Coral Springs’ house in the 600 block of Northwest 127th Avenue in which Johnson lived with Morrison’s son, Devon Morrison.

Johnson told police Morrison told her that money was for doing a good job taking care of Weiner.

  1. Hired high price Attorneys, buying $400K and $328k properties in East Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs Florida and getting a large number of felonies for pawning stolen properties using false identities. Both Jamaicans. Who is Devon Morrison.

  2. The one on the right look so much like Octavia Spencer. Not sure what they expected to happen here after the theft.

  3. Some of these children for these people are real shithouses, they just leave their sick parents for dead and can’t wait to come inherit. How on God’s earth it takes you 6months to realize your mom is dead, and only cause you got a notice of unpaid bills. She obviously never give a damn about the woman. That’s y these thieves think they could get away with this

  4. Something nuh rite if she the daughter hired them and the mother had dementia shouldn’t she have control of the finances. How were they able to withdraw such large amounts of money in 5 intervals without the bank notify the daughter.Where is the lady body? who made funeral arrangements? Did they have a will? Why this happen 2years ago and is now she get them arrested? Seems as if the mother cut her off fi true 2012 you claim you hired caretaker and you didn’t check credentials then and you nuh go look fi you mother in 4years fi see if she ok and you knew these woman were getting pay raises and you didn’t intervene she sounds like the criminal.

    1. Stop making excuses for the two crooks. They rob the woman money and now they will face significant jail time.

BTW, you do not know what the situation is with the Daughter which prevents her from overseeing her mother’s care. Maybe she had severe health issues of her own or have family issues in New Jersey which was consuming her time.

That Devon Morrison name is on both properties (Fort Lauderdale and Coral Spring properties). Devon Morrison is married to Angella Morrison and lived at the fort lauderdale property. They were living the high life, including expensive motor vehicle with stolen funds. This is quite common in the line of work these women were engage in. How does a CNA making $10-$12/hr afford a $100K vehicle?
