The Police High Command is denying allegations of widespread s*xual harassment in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
This follows claims that some female cops have not been promoted because they refused s*xual advances from their commanders.
Speaking on RJR’s Hotline programme Friday afternoon, Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the JCF’s Corporate Communications Unit, said the Force has a strict policy on s*xual harassment.
Superintendent Lindsay said she had discussions with Novelette Grant, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Administration, about the allegations but neither of the two had heard of the claims before.
However, she encouraged members of the Force who believe they might have had that experience to immediately report these cases of s*xual harassment to the High Command.
The issue of promotion has become a hot topic in the Force since National Minister Robert Montague last week called for the Police Commissioner and Police Services Commission to elevate more members.
Commissioner orders probe
In the meantime, the Police High Command has said it takes seriously allegations of victimisation made in the media by persons who were identified as members of the Police Force.
After calling a meeting on Friday with members of the High Command, Commissioner George Quallo ordered a probe to determine whether the established framework to deal with reports of unfair treatment within the Force – the Grievance Procedure Policy – is working.
The Inspectorate of Constabulary will oversee the review process and report its findings to the Commissioner within thirty (30) days.
