SINGER George Nooks has been removed from the line-up of the Mother’s Day concert — A Gift for Mom — set for next Sunday at the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew.This comes in the wake of his recent legal woes after he was held with cocaine by the police in an operation in the Corporate Area on Friday night.
A source close to the production told the Jamaica Observer that Nooks was removed from the show as it became clear the level of pressure which would have come to bear on the organisers. The source further denied that the team’s decision was based on pressure from sponsors.
“The organisers haven’t decided on a replacement yet. They will be having a meeting tomorrow (Monday) to look at that,” said the source who wished not to be identified.
Nooks was set to appear alongside local acts Sanchez and Romain Virgo, as well as American R&B act Freddie Jackson.
According to police reports, Nooks, 56, was held by narcotics detectives who were on operation in the Widcome Heights area of Kingston 6. The singer was reportedly observed acting in a manner that aroused their suspicion. He was accosted and a bag he was carrying searched; it was found to contain just under two ounces of cocaine. He was charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Nooks was offered station bail in the sum of $80,000 and is due to face the Kingston & St Andrew Parish Court on May 17.
Known for popular secular and gospel tracks, Nooks came to prominence in the 1970s under the moniker Prince Mohammed. His early tracks included Tribal War and Forty Leg Dread. In recent years his repertoire shifted to gospel and God Is Standing By became the standard-bearer track for this genre.
