Health care professionals still commonly recommend ginger to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting. It is also used as a digestive aid for mild stomach upset. Germany’s Commission E has approved ginger as a treatment for indigestion and motion sickness.

Evidence suggests that oral use of cayenne can reduce the pain of indigestion. In a double-blind study, individuals with indigestion were given either 2.5 grammes daily of red pepper powder (divided up and taken prior to meals) or placebo for five weeks. By the third week of treatment, individuals taking red pepper were experiencing significant improvements in pain, bloating and nausea as compared to placebo, and these relative improvements lasted through the end of the study.

Aloe

Aloe is most commonly associated with healing burns and minor cuts, but the African plant is also quite effective at reducing indigestion. The plant contains the laxative compounds barbaloin, aloin and aloe-emodin, which also have an anti-inflammatory effect on the inner lining of the intestinal tract.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum may be one of the best non-medicinal treatments for heartburn. In a 2001 study, researchers from Wake Forest University in North Carolina found that chewing gum increased oesophageal and pharyngeal pH, which in turn reduced the effects of heartburn. This is because chewing gum pushes back fluids and floods the oesophagus with alkaline saliva. This in turns neutralises the acids that cause the burning associated with indigestion.

Basil

Basil is thought to have a calming effect on the stomach and half teaspoon of dried or fresh basil leaf in water can often help sooth indigestion and alleviate feelings of fullness.
