VENDING operations in a section of the Coronation Market were hindered on Friday morning because of the presence of a crippled man.
The man, known only as Horsey, turned away prospective customers because of his odour and condition.
Seemingly weak, disoriented and in pain, Horsey sat swarmed by flies in his mess on a piece of cardboard on the floor close to the vendors’ stalls.
“The people can’t get to do any business from morning,” market manager, Sonia Legister, told the Jamaica Observer, as she explained that the flies deterred customers.
“A vegetable them sell eno…nobody nuh want that,” she continued.
Legister said that she, along with the market’s security guard, Cecil Williams, notified the police who gave them a number to call and told them they could not move the man as it was out of their control to do so. Williams said that when he called the number, the phone was answered by a woman who refused to listen to him and eventually hung up on him as he explained the situation.
However, when the Sunday Observer team went to the Darling Street Police Station, an officer on duty said that although the duty was not in the job description of police personnel, officers were sent to the location to move the man and they were trying to contact the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) to get an ambulance to pick him up.
Two policewomen soon entered the station, each wearing gloves and reported that the man was moved and was placed in a police vehicle to be transported to the hospital.
Horsey was taken to the KPH by the police personnel, who said that their efforts to contact the hospital for an ambulance were unsuccessful.
‘Horsey’ previously sold bottles for a living on nearby Barry Street.
Morning, You know this is so sad, nowadays nobody help anyone, the man use to hustle bottle for a living, he is not a theif, this really move me when I read the story.
Me GLAD them take him up and bring him to the KPH…
But why didn’t they contact Father Holung’s place? They would have come and got him. Life can be such a wretched experience, ongle God knows why there is so much suffering in dis world.. Heartbreaking to the core.
