Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley has said the theft of copper cables will pose a threat to national security if it continues.
Dr. Wheatley said he is concerned that the theft of cables for the scrap metal trade continues to affect telecommunications in Jamaica and may be more than a minor inconvienence.
He has joined the call for increased penalties for the theft of copper cables, saying the “full force of the law” must come down on persons caught committing the act.
“It is time for us to aggressively put in place measures to apprehend those persons caught or involved in the action of illegal removal of cables because they are not only removing critical infrastructure but they are also threatening national security,” he said.
Telecommunications company Flow has made numerous efforts to stop the theft of copper wires including a partnership with Crime Stop.
Copper wires also used to make bullets. Not just affecting telecommuncations but to murder our citizens.
