“Nevertheless, as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has restrained me from harming you, unless you had come quickly to meet me, surely there would not have been left to Nabal until the morning light as much as one male.” So David received from her hand what she had brought him and said to her, “Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to you and granted your request.” 1Sam 25:34 – 35
There was an unwise and thoughtless rich man who was disrespectful of the fact that his men and wealth were being protected by David. Nabal was a descendant of Caleb who had thousands of sheep and goat and at the time when he was shearing them, David sent ten of his men to go and ask him for some food. It was on a festive day when food and drink was in abundance and David’s request was a humble prayer based on the fact that David and his men had been good to him. Remember that David was a courageous warrior who could not be stopped from getting what he wanted. When Saul decided to test him by asking him to bring the fore-skins of 100 philistines, David had no trouble delivering. He never lost a battle. So, it was crazy and stupid for Nabal to turn David’s request down in the manner in which he did. So David swore;
“Surely in vain I have guarded all that this man has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has returned me evil for good.”May God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if by morning I leave as much as one male of any who belong to him.” (1Samuel 25 – KJV)
But Nabal was blessed with an intelligent virtuous woman who knew just how to keep and protect her home; Abigail swung into action, taking many gifts to go and appease David who was well on his way to deal with Nabal. Today, I want you to thank God for the Abigails in your life who intervened to rescue you from evil that you deserved. The Abigail in your life might be your pastor or spiritual father who stood in the gap praying for mercy at a time when you were living in rebellion against the will of God. The Abigail in your life might be that spouse who never stopped praying until you surrendered, repented from sin and gave your life to the Lord Jesus. King Saul could have been saved if he had an Abigail who prayed for him to receive the grace to serve God with obedience and humility. Judas would have been saved if he had an Abigail who prayed for him to resist the temptation that led him to betray his Lord and Master. So many lives and destinies have been destroyed because there was no Abigail to intervene and intercede for them.
