Trinidad and Tobago Health Minister Fuad Khan says he fears chikungunya cases in the twin island republic “might spread from 1,000 to one million cases” if people don’t make a concerted effort keep their immediate surroundings clean.
CHIKV is spread by the bite of the dreaded Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also transmits dengue fever.
Khan added: “If people kept their places clean we would not have CHIKV—especially people with empty lots. It has reached a stage where they should be charged. All those derelict vehicles are left to rot on empty lots. People just don’t care about keeping the environment clean.”
With a tinge of sarcasm, Dr Khan said: “Just now it will be one million with CHIKV. We are calling upon the population to call the public health inspectors. We need to start being a little firm.”
Man have a point.
