Police assault
Two vendors who peddle their goods on the streets of downtown Kingston were on Wednesday fined on four charges.
The women, Lisania Brown and Andrea Coke plead guilty to the charges — malicious destruction of property, unlawful vending, resisting arrest, and using indecent language.
The court heard that the women committed the acts against a District Constable (DC) who attempted to seize their goods, which the policeman said were being sold unlawfully.
They were said to have torn the denim shirt of the DC and behaved rowdily when he attempted to enforce the law.
When asked what led them to commit such acts, Coke, the only one who spoke, told Chief Parish Judge Judith Pusey it was out of frustration.
“We don’t just beat him off so your honour. Every day him come an a tek set pan we your honour,” she reasoned.
“Do you have a licence to sell there?” Pusey then questioned, to which Coke responded ‘No’.
“The officer is doing his job!” she blasted. “Don’t come tell me how him take set on you. If you were doing the right thing then the officer wouldn’t have a reason to come to you.”
The women were then ordered to pay a total of $10,000 each — $5,000 or six months in jail for the malicious destruction of property conviction; $3,000 for illegal vending; $1,000 or 10 days for the use of indecent language and $1000 for resisting arrest.
“You must learn to respect the officer of the State,” Pusey chided.
