WOMAN POLICE TRIED TO SOLICIT 20K FROM MOTORIST

Woman constable held on corruption charges
A woman constable has been slapped with corruption charges after she tried to solicit money from a motorist during a traffic stop in Old Harbour on December 4 last year.

Woman Constable Princess Bennett was offered bail in the sum of $500,000when she appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court on Corruption charges last week.

Bennett was reportedly a part of a police team on patrol in the Old Harbour area that signalled a motorist to stop. Upon requesting the documents for the vehicle, she observed that they were expired.

Bennett, along with Corporal Arnold Gordon, allegedly proceeded to solicit $20,000 from the motorist in order to avoid prosecution for violating the Road Traffic Act. However, when the money was not forthcoming the motor vehicle was seized.

A report was made to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) which resulted in the arrest of Corporal Gordon. He was later positively identified during an identification parade and charged on Thursday February 9.

Bennett, who was absent from work at the time of Gordon’s arrest, was later arrested by operatives from MOCA and placed on an identification parade on Tuesday March 7, where she was also positively identified by the complainant.

Both will return to court on Tuesday April 11, 2017.
