Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Imo State Police Command, have arrested a 60-year-old man, Onyekwere Umunna, for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said in a statement in Owerri on Wednesday that the suspect had confessed to the crime.
The statement said the suspect was arrested by SARS operatives in Akokwa in the Ideato North Local Government Area of the state.
It added that the suspect hails from Achara in the Obowo Local Government Area of the state, while the victim is a native of Ndiakaemeuno Arondizuogu in the Ideato North Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson stated that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigation.
The statement read in part, “On August 6, 2019, around 5.45pm, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Akokwa annex, while responding to a distress call, arrested one Onyekwere Umunna, 60, of Achara in the Obowo LGA, who was alleged to have defiled a seven-year-old girl from Ndiakaemeuno Arondizuogu in the Ideato North LGA.
“The suspect has confessed to the crime, while the victim has been taken to hospital for medical examination/treatment.”
Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had been transferred to the command headquarters in Owerri for the continuation of investigation and possible prosecution.
