Samuel Udom and Babatunde Liasu — who allegedly stole their employers’ cash and valuables worth N43.9 million, were on Tuesday granted a temporary reprieve on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused — Udom, 24, and Liasu, 25 — who are both residents of Okeira in Ajah area of Lagos, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
According to the Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi, the accused committed the offences with others still at large on Nov. 3, 2017, at Mosley Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Emuerhi said the accused, who worked as cleaners for Mr and Mrs Obeahon Ohiwerei, stole 10,000 dollars (N3.6million).
Other valuables stolen from the complainant’s room include a bag of jewellery valued at N40 million, clothes and belts estimated N43.9 million.
“The accused, who had been working for the complainant for some time, broke into their room and made away with the items.
“The duo was apprehended by the police and during interrogation, they could not give a satisfactory explanation,” Emuerhi told the court.
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates seven years jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, granted the accused a bail of N200, 000 each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
Amzat said that one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused, while all the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until June 16 for the mention.
