A SCRAP IRON dealer charged with stealing part of a bridge
was on Tuesday denied bail for his criminal record to be checked by the police.
Defendant Terrence Jones of Williamsville appeared before deputy chief magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Court.
He was charged that last Thursday at Massy Lands Road, Gasparillo he allegedly stole $187,000 worth of steel, the property of the State.
The charge was laid by constable Mohammed of the Gasparillo police station.
Jones who was unrepresented told the court he lived at Reform Village and had no matters before the court. But police prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said that Jones was yet to be traced by the police.
This is to be able to ascertain whether he had any previous or pending matters in court. Jones, 38 was remanded into custody until tomorrow.
He was arrested last Friday after investigations led to him when a quantity of steel was found in a person’s yard.
The steel was identified as belonging to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. The Express learnt that the steel was allegedly taken from under a bridge. The bridge has since been repaired.
