The Praedial Larceny Prevention Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is reminding members of the public to be careful when consuming meat.
This latest warning comes after two pregnant cows were slaughtered by thieves on a farm in the Riversdale community of St Catherine on Friday, June 12.
Head of the unit DSP Kevin Francis said that no heifer or pregnant animal must be slaughtered unless it is inspected by a registered veterinary surgeon/practitioner, certifying in writing that the animal is fit for human consumption and also the Public Health Inspector within the parish.
He said this constitutes a breach of the Livestock Control Order (1973) and the Public Health Act.
DSP Francis lamented that there are serious public health concerns for individuals who ingest or otherwise consume meat that are unfit for human consumption.
He further noted that based on information received, the mode of transportation used to move the carcasses from the farm would be deemed highly unsanitary and pose grave public health risks for members of the public.
Anyone with information that can assist the police is being asked to contact the Praedial Larceny Prevention Unit at 927-1731-50, Riversdale Police Station at 903-7539, police 119 emergency number, or the nearest police station.
