The Jamaica Defence Force has (JDF) issued a special call out of its reserve amid tension arising from the results of the general elections.
A statement from the JDF said the reserve will be required for one week from February 29 – March 7.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and the prime minister-designate Andrew Holness called for calm following anxiety over the recounting of ballots.
On Thursday night, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was declared the winner of the elections based on the preliminary count which gave it a 33-seat majority to the People’s National Party (PNP’s) 30.
However, the margin has narrowed to 32-31 after the final count resulted in the PNP’s Dr Winston Green picking up the St Mary South Eastern seat with a nine-vote majority over the JLP’s Dr Norman Dunn.
The JLP says it will be filing for a magisterial recount.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica is to update the country on Monday on the results.
