An 84-year-old man who has been accused of sexually molesting two girls in the 1980’s is to face trial in the St Thomas circuit court in July.
The complainants who are adults now living overseas made a report to the police in 2013 of the alleged sexual assault and the accused man was arrested and charged.
A preliminary enquiry was held into the matter and the accused was committed to stand trial on carnal abuse charges.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Maxine Jackson told the court that the court was ready to start the trial.
However, defense lawyer, Hensley Williams informed the court that the accused was deaf and he was unable to get instructions from him.
Williams said the accused was evaluated for hearing impairment and analysis revealed that he was deaf in both ears.
He said his client was poor and could not afford treatment or mechanical device in relation to the hearing impairment.
Williams pointed out that during the preliminary enquiry it was the accused man’s elderly wife who communicated to him what was being said in court, but she was now incapacitated.
Justice Marcia Dunbar Green has instructed that the courtroom be equipped with the necessary devices to assist the accused man to hear when he returns to court for his trial.
