By Toluwani Olamitoke Crime & Court
“My husband’s day is made when he drink s and womanises. He’s not bothered that our children are not receiving the necessary care or that our marriage is gradually crashing. All he cares about is to drink, get drunk and have endless s3x with other women.”
Kafilat Taoheed has told Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, she’s no longer interested in her 14-year-old marriage to her husband, Adisa Taoheed.
Kalifat stated that her husband was a failure when it comes to carrying out his responsibilities at home. According to her, what he derives pleasure in is to drink, womanise and beat her when he’s drunk.
She told the court she was fed up with their marriage and thus appealed to it to terminate their marriage and award her custody of their three children.
She also requested that the court restrains him from coming to harass her at her dwelling place or work place.
“My husband has failed to take care of me and our children. He rarely gave us feeding allowance and when he did, it was grudgingly. He was fond of complaining that he didn’t have money.
“My lord, when we enrolled our first and second children in school he demanded that I should pay the fee of one while he paid for the other. Many times he defaulted in paying the second’s child fee and I had to bail him out.
“We also rented a room and a parlour apartment and he asked me to be responsible for the rent of one of the rooms while he agreed to pay for the other, but he also defaulted in this agreement, “she said.
“He learnt barbing but was not doing well on the job. I, therefore, took him to my brother who got a job for him at the quarry.
“He was faring well, and thereafter took to drinking and keeping late nights. He would drink himself to stupor and return home drunk. He would then vomit all over the place and leave me to clear up the mess.
“He not only drank, he was also womanising. He ran after everything in skirt and lavished his money on them.
“He would descend on me with heavy blows whenever I complained of his atrocities and would almost snuff life out of me.
“I moved out of his house with our last child when I realised he was not ready to change and could kill me, “she added.
“He kept the other two children with him away from him. I was always appealing to him on the phone to let me see them but he refused.
“I later got to know the boarding school he kept the children and went to visit them there. I wept profusely when I saw them because they were a sorry sight.
“Their house mistress told me their school fees had not been paid and that they had no school uniform, text books and exercise books. I immediately paid for all these.
“My lord, I pray that you grant me custody of our children so that I can give them the necessary care, “the plaintiff told the court.
“My lord, I don’t drink to stupor or vomit. The incident she referred to happened 10 years ago, “the defendant said.
“I have never sharked my responsibilities at home. She’s just making up stories.
‘We neither quarreled nor fought the day she packed out of my house. She cooked and served me and our children rice and I bought bottles of soft drinks which we drank along with the rice.
“Before I returned home from work, she had told a motorcyclist to take our first two children to my mother. She then packed all her belongings and left with our last child.
“On my way home those living on the same street with us started congratulating me; they told me they saw my wife moving our property into a bus and that she told them we were moving into our own house.
“I was shocked when I heard this and ran home. On getting there, I realised she had packed all her belongings out of my house.
“I later learnt she had moved in with her lover on the next street.
“Since she left, she has been calling and raining curses on me for allegedly keeping our children away from her, “the defendant stated.
After he had listened to both parties, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade stated that it would be proper to see the children before judgment was given.
He, therefore, adjourned the case till January 9, 2018 and ordered the duo to come to court with their children.
