Unchanging Love of the Unchangable God
“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:16-17
A Saturday in July is a typical day for a wedding feast. Wedding reminds all of love. That is the atmosphere at a wedding I attended lately. The bride’s grandfather quoted from memory, a moving selection of Scripture about the relationship of husband and wife. Next, a friend of the couple’s recited Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116, “Let me not to be marriage of true minds admit impediments…” And the officiating minister lifted a line from this sonnet to illustrate the kind of love that should characterize a Christian marriage: “Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds” that is to say, true love does not change with circumstances.
The minister noted the many changes the couple would experience during their life together, including health and the inevitable effects of age. He challenged them to cultivate the true biblical love that neither falters nor fails in spite of the alterations that would surely come their way.
As I witnessed the joy and excitement that beamed from the young couple, our verse of scripture today come to mind: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” God never changes, and neither does His love for us by virtue of which He abundantly avails us of His precious gifts. How could He ever change towards us when He had loved us even while we were yet sinners: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Beloved, know you today and always that you are a recipient of undying love from your heavenly Father who have loved you “with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). We are called to accept His unfailing love everyday and every time, to allow it to shape our lives, and to extend it to others always.
Liberation Thought: God’s love still stands when all else has fallen.
