Gang Leader Girlfriend Gets Bail, But Mother Remains In Custody
The girlfriend of alleged gang leader Andre ‘Blackman’ Bryan was yesterday granted bail with strict conditions.
Alicia Brown, 27, was offered bail in the sum of $1 million in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston after another application by her attorney Oswest Senior Smith that she be freed while awaiting trial.
Bryan’s mother, Millicent Brown, 53, was not so fortunate.
Despite reports that her health was failing, a judge rejected her application for bail.
The three have been in custody since March when they were arrested and charged, along with Bryan’s brother, Kevaughn Green, with various offences under the anti-gang legislation.
Bryan and Green also remain in custody.
As part of her bail conditions, Alicia Brown was ordered to reside in the Corporate Area and not visit the parish of St Catherine.
She was also ordered to remain at home between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. and to report to the Central Police Station several times a week.
Further, a stop order has been placed on the 27-year-old and she was ordered to surrender her travel documents to the police.
All four are scheduled to return to court on December 13.
Alicia Brown is facing a charge of providing a benefit to a criminal organisation.
Investigators say she rented a home, at a monthly rate of US$1,500 or J$190,000, in a gated community in Upper St Andrew for herself, the alleged gang leader and members of his family.
Bryan, 33, is charged with leading a criminal organisation and attempting to recruit an adult to a criminal organisation.
Millicent Brown is charged with being a part of a criminal organisation by facilitating the commission of a serious offence and obtaining a benefit from a criminal organisation.
Green, 25, is charged with being a part of a criminal organisation by facilitating the commission of a serious crime.
Why aren’t these charges, some of which I’ve never heard of before, being more widely used? It sound like half a Jamaica would be in prison if that were the case..including 3/4 a Di police force
