Alexus Newland, 21, who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the murder of three year-old Nevalesia Campbell of Orange Hill in Brown’s Town, St. Ann two years ago, was on Friday sentenced to 20 years in prison at hard labour.
He will be eligible for parole after 16 years.
Newland was sentenced in the St. Ann Circuit Court.
Nevalesia’s body, which had chop wounds, was found in a gully on July 10, 2016, hours after she was reported missing.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Marcia Dunbar Green took note that Newland pleaded guilty under the Criminal Justice Administration Provision Act which facilitated a reduction in his sentence.
The judge also took into consideration that Newland had been in lock up for two years and three months.
Despite his lawyer Linton Gordon’s plea for mercy stating that Newland had a mental challenge and assisted in the search for Nevealesia, the judge reminded the court that the psychiatric report stated that Newland had no previous mental illness and was fit to plea.
Justice Dunbar-Green told Newland that the act he committed was gruesome, senseless and irrational and that he showed no sign of remorse.
She asked Newland if he had anything to say to Nevalesia’s mother who was present in court, to which he softly said he was sorry.
Good job Mrs.Justice Dunbar-Green we need more Judges like you! Bout insanity…
