A man who was arrested after he drove a motorcycle that was stolen from a policeman onto the compound of a police station was offered $100,000 bail when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
Orlando Campbell, an electrician and plumber of Lincoln Avenue in Kingston, was arrested at Kingston Central Police Station on September 1 and later charged with receiving stolen property.
According to the police report, on August 9, between 8:00 pm and 1:45 am, the policeman was at his home in Hope Flats, Kingston, when he heard his dogs barking and went outside to check. He did not see anyone, but discovered that his bike, which he had parked, was missing.
He subsequently reported the matter.
On September 1, the policeman was on duty at Kingston Central Police Station when he saw a bike resembling his parked on the compound. On closer inspection, the cop recognised the bike as his, based on certain marks, and called his colleagues.
The motorbike chassis number, when checked, was similar to that of the complainant’s bike.
Campbell, who had gone to the station to use the automated teller machine, when questioned about the bike reported that he had purchased it from an individual but had no receipt or documents for the vehicle.
On Friday when he appeared in court, his attorney, Sashanagaye Dennis, during her bail application, maintained that Campbell had bought the bike from an individual called Shizzle, following a recommendation from one of his friends and that he was not aware that the bike was stolen.
Campbell was then offered bail by Parish Judge Vaughn Smith on condition that he report to the Harbour View Police Station on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
He is to return to court on January 9 next year.
