More than a dozen men have been detained in a police/military operation in Bull Bay which borders St. Andrew and St. Thomas.
The massive operation is in response to the upsurge in violence in the community.
Five persons have been fatally shot in Bull Bay since the start of the year.
Superintendent Victor Hamilton, Commanding Officer for the East Kingston Police Division, said the operation, which began at 3 o’clock Thursday morning, is in search of wanted men in the community.
Major Basil Jarrett, Media Affairs Officer for the Jamaica Defence Force, said soldiers will be maintaining a presence in the area to restore calm.
He urged residents in the community to assist the security forces by providing them with the necessary information.
Major Jarrett said 18 people have been detained so far in the operation, “four of which are strongly suspected to be linked to one of the gangs or even all of the gangs operating in this space.”
The security forces say gangs have made it difficult to maintain order in sections of Eastern Kingston and St. Thomas.
They say the gangs, which are based in Bobo Hill, Taylor Land, Tank Hill and Beechwood have been fighting for turf.
Residents say they have been forced off the streets, houses burnt to the ground and businesses shut down due to the brazen gun fights between gunmen in the area.
Robberies are also on the increase in the community.
