The government of Jamaica has threatened to punish people who violate orders that significantly restrict the operation of people across the island amid the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, at a press conference a short while ago, announced that the following measures will be in effect for seven days, starting Wednesday:
- Everyone, except essential workers, should work from home effective.
-There should be no gathering in public space of over 20 persons (including funerals, churches and weddings).
- Bars and places of entertainment such as night clubs should be closed.
-Markets will be open from 6AM to 2PM.
- Supermarkets, restaurants, corner shops and pharmacies will be allowed to remain open, but with no large gathering.
- Hospital visits will be reduced to ONCE per day, and to ONE person. Outpatient clinics will also be scaled down.
-JUTC & Mobay Metro will be required to carry only seated passangers.
-Taxis should carry one less passenger than required.
Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte, in the meantime, said, based on the law, people who violate the order can be fined $1 million maximum or be imprisoned for a period not exceeding 12 months.
“Be warned, the laws will be enforced,” she noted.
Enforcement can be done by the police, soldiers, firemen, health officer, nurse, vet, and even the CEO of the National Works Agency.
