IT’S double grief for the family of singer Wayne ‘Sleng Teng’ Smith. One month after his death, they are mourning the loss of his older brother who was killed on Tuesday.
Police report that 51-year-old Carl Williams, a dental technician, was shot by gunmen at his home on Bay Farm Road in Kingston.
According to the Corporate Communication Unit, the incident took place at 11:25 pm.
“Williams was at home when gunmen reportedly gained entry to the premises and demanded that he hand over all his valuables. When the demand was not met they opened fire, hitting him several times,” the report stated.
The Jamaica Observer spoke with Williams’ nephew Tidel Smith, who said the family is struggling to cope with the latest blow.
“We are still in shock. I really don’t know what my grandmother is feeling, losing two sons within the same period,” he said.
Wayne Smith earned a place in reggae history when he recorded Under Mi Sleng Teng in 1984. It was done on the Sleng Teng beat, which marked the beginning of dancehall music’s digital age.
He died from a stomach-related illness on Monday, February 17.

Just as much as we went above and beyond to prosecute Kartel with forensics and ballistic evidence, that’s how aggressive we must be in prosecuting every crime, every murder. When all else fails, huge rewards and immunity must be extended to persons willing to come forward. That is the only way they will realize that they need to go pick up bottles or push handcart instead of picking up guns.
