Majority of Windrush victims Jamaican, says UK journalist
Amelia Gentleman, the Guardian newspaper journalist who broke the story on the Windrush scandal in the UK, has said the majority of the affected persons are Jamaicans.
Speaking on TVJ’s Smile Jamaica Tuesday morning, Ms Gentleman said, of the 2,000 people who have received documentation confirming their status in the UK, about half are Jamaican.
She said progress is being made concerning individuals who were wrongly detained, denied legal rights and threatened with deportation.
To date, the Windrush Task Force has received 6,000 calls from victims, she added.
The UK Government recently admitted that 83 Windrush victims may have been wrongfully deported.
Ms Gentleman said she has been in Jamaica since last week, seeking to speak with those individuals.
She urged those victims to contact her by email at [email protected].
Wind rush ppl please come out and email the lady. Hope the govt a day advocates working these ppl reach out to her.
