Attorneys for Paul Coote, who is charged with the murders of his girlfriend and their two children, are concerned that the video recording of an interview conducted by detainees of their client could jeopardise his case.
The interview was done while Mr. Coote was in the holding area at the Hanover Police headquarters shortly after he was taken into custody for the April 25 murders.
His attorney, Tamika Davis, told RJR News that the video could affect Mr. Coote’s chances of a fair trial because it was widely circulated and published in the media.
“Certainly, in relation to any person charged and before the court, a publication like that has the potential to undermine the possibility of a fair hearing. It’s just that in the instant case, we have not yet so determined because he has been remanded for a psychiatric evaluation to be done, and I guess upon his assessment there, we can determine how we will proceed,” she said.
Ms Davis is one of two attorneys assigned to Mr. Coote through the Legal Aid Council.
Mr. Coote was remanded at the Tower Street Adult Corrrectional Centre for a psychiatric evaluation following his appearance in the Hanover Parish Court on Thursday.
He is to return to court on June 26.
