I feel so offended by Dr Ferguson’s remarks about premature babies not being babies in the real sense. My daughter Kristiana Isabel Shaw was born on June 5, 2009, three and a half months premature. She weighed one pound, four ounces at birth. Her mom, my dear wife Susan, her water broke at 22 weeks gestation while I was Minister of Finance on a visit to England sponsored by Jamaica National.
The Obstetrician advised me by telephone that at 22 weeks the baby was not viable and suggested a spontaneous abortion be induced. I objected to this and my wife checked out of the hospital and went home, elevated her body with pillows and drank water.
We were able to transfer her to a miami hospital and the first thing they did there was to put my wife on a drip. the theory was simple, her water broke so give her more water!
She was then given steroids to hasten the development of the baby’s lungs and brain etc and Kristiana was born 3 and a half weeks later and was in an incubater for several months.
Ktistiana is a Gemini like her daddy and is in grade 1 in school today.
From her premature birth Kristiana was a baby in a real sense. A living, breathing wonderful human being that had a will to live and a mother who was committed to go the extra mile with her along with committed health care workers.
Dr Ferguson. Our premies are babies in a real sense. Kristiana was one. We need to give all our able health professionals in Jamaica the tools and the sanitary conditions to help save our children born prematurely.
Yes we can save our premies.
Kristiana Isabel. Kristiana means “christlike” and Isabel means “consecrated to God”
Well. All our little premies are Christlike and are consecrated to God. They are all babies in a real sense.
Let us pray for better governance in Jamaica so that we can protect everyone including our little premies.
May God bless our premies and may God bless Jamaica land we love.
amen..well said…
