The St Mary community of Epsom has been plunged into mourning following Tuesday’s discovery of the body of an eight-year-old girl who is suspected to have drowned, after being washed away as she crossed a river on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Kimora Whyte of Epsom in the parish. She was a student of the Epsom Primary School.
Her body was found on Tuesday afternoon in Annotto Bay, some distance away from her community.
Reports are that sometime after 3pm on Monday, Whyte was attempting to cross a river in Epsom, when it is believed the water carried her away.
The river was said to be in spate as a result of heavy rains that affected the area.
A search was subsequently launched by community members, the police and members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, but all attempts failed, and the search discontinued.
On Tuesday, members of the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) joined the search for the mising girl.
Young Kimora’s body was located sometime after 12pm, dashing the hopes of family members and friends that she would be found.
A post-mortem is to be conducted, according to the police who are probing the child’s death.
