The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) is warning persons to be on the lookout for counterfeit goods that could endanger their lives.
Velma Ricketts Walker, Commissioner of Jamaica Customs, said customs officers have seized fake goods such as medication, cooking gas cylinders and other defective household items at the country’s ports.
She said when tested, many of these items, such as the pharmaceuticals, have been found to contain incorrect doses and there have been cases of tablets being coated with common household paint.
Other items are said to contain poisonous ingredients, while others have not met safety standards.
She said many of these products if used by consumers could cause serious injury or even death.
Approximately $65 million worth of infringing products were disposed of by the Jamaica Customs Agency up to September this year.
