there are two different statuses in kingston…live a town and live uptown…one should also note the distinct difference in speech patterns between the two…if you listen to bella, yendi or even dat bloodklaat cockroach lauren di inflections in dem speech is different dan di average kingstonian…mi madda call it di uptown awkcent….as fi country…ppl from mobay sound different from di ppl inna westmoreland vs clarendon etc….another the differences in speech is that kingstonians have evolved code switching to integrate more english into the patwa…a kingstonian may say..mi did a call yuh last nite…someone from clarendon may say mi ben deh call yuh last nite..a kingstonian may say di man vault over di fence and run whe….someone from st elizabeth may say di man kin puppa lick ova di fence and teck off dung di road…country ppl tend to retain the more original forms of patwa in their speech…it is their more adept skill at code switching that determines the kingstonians perceived superiority…because superiority does not begin with a perception of wealth..but a difference in language…an example of this is ppl in england who speak with a cockney accent were long considered inferior to londoners….ppl live in tenement yards in country and town so so language is the defining factor in determining dominance.. ….this explains the reason uptown ppl have their own little “awkcent”…
