The Police High Command has ordered a top level investigation into Friday’s shooting in Montego Bay, St. James, which left an alleged gang leader dead.
He is Steven Elvis Malcolm, a resident of Cantebury in St. James.
The shooting along Queens Drive, on which several hotels are located, caused panic among pedestrians and motorists.
Deputy Superintendent Gary McKenzie, head of Operations for the St. James Police, said Mr. Malcolm was ambushed shortly after he left court by rival factions carrying high powered weapons.
DSP McKenzie said police in the area responded to the scene quickly and the attackers alighted their vehicles and ran in separate directions.
The gunmen left two vehicles on the scene which were seized by the police.
According to the senior cop, several suspects have also been detained.
The Constabulary Communications Unit (CCU) said Mr. Malcolm was the leader of the Nation Cross Gang in Cantebury.
He appeared in court Friday morning on a gun related charge.
