A Guyanese man who works as a baggage handler at New York’s JFK Airport has been arrested and charged for conspiracy to import cocaine into the U.S following a sting operation.
According to documents seen by News Source, Guyanese national, Marlon Joseph, works at the JFK Airport with the Dnata company as a baggage handler in Terminal One.
US Agent, Edward Gonzalez in his court filing reported that since September of 2016, agents have been probing a narcotics importation conspiracy and recently they received importation about the planned shipment of “five bricks” of cocaine in a blue drawstring bag in the cargo hold of a Fly Jamaica direct flight from Guyana.
The information was gathered through the work of a confidential source and was supported by recorded conversations and telephone calls.
The shipment was expected to arrive on October 25, 2017.
When the plane arrived, law enforcement at JFK conducted a sweep of the plane and placed a blue drawstring bag with five bricks of a substance which resembles cocaine.
According to the Court documents, the agents monitored the movement of the bag from the plane’s cargo hold and into a baggage area in terminal one by an individual referred to in Court documents as “LM”.
Later agents noticed the movement of the bag by the same “LM” individual.
The man reportedly took the bag to the parking garage and was met there by Marlon Joseph. The two went into a Honda motor car that is also registered to Joseph.
As they drove out of the parking lot, Federal agents stopped the car and noticed the two men. Joseph was in the driver’s seat while LM was in the front passenger’s seat. As the two men were taken out of the car, the agents noticed the blue bag that they have placed on the plane with the five fake bricks of cocaine. However, when they opened the bag, only three of the fake bricks were in.
As agents searched the car, they found a package in the driver’s side door with objects made to look like shoe soles. The objects were taken out and field tested positive for cocaine. The real cocaine weighed just over two pounds.
According to the agents, Joseph admitted knowledge of the blue bag that should have arrived with cocaine and also admitted knowledge of the shoe soles that tested positive for cocaine.
He was arrested and charged along with the other individual. There are also reports that at least three other men have been arrested and charged as part of the ring.
The probe continues.
