Is recount of Jamaica is not factual. Jamaican hotel ownership is multinational including Jamaicans and very little Chinese owned.
The large Chinese investments in Jamaica is needed.
I always thought the Mexicans, Colombians, Dominicans were the ones who owned most of the hotels in Jamaica? Umar’s information about Chinese owning hotels is not 100% accurate. But he’s not telling us anything we don’t know already…but how do we as Jamaicans solve the problem?
I have not even finished listening to this clip and it speaks volumes. I do not always agree with Dr Umar Johnson but he hit the ball out the park on this one. I am a Jamaican living in the US. My father of Chinese descent, my mother black. Living in Jamaica I honestly did not know what racism felt like, our motto being “Out of many one people”. My dad doesn’t have a racist bone in his body. He did however explained that out of all his 6 brothers, he was the only one that did not see color he love who he loves. He did not explained that his other siblings were racists against blacks I just sort of figured it out because the uncles never cared too much for us the biracial kids. I never seen them at any family functions and my dad didn’t care too much about their absence. He was a ghetto youth even with Chinese blood in his veins. He was never well off like some off them that owns stuff all over the island. I have a sister however, that is much older than me that decided in her college years to travel to China with the intent of meeting relatives that are still there, mainly cousins. My father tried to tell her the culture is different and not to have have her hopes up. She went and felt the cold shoulder. They did at least hosted her in their home but treated her like the stranger she was to them. They had mild curiosity even though out of all my dad’s kids she had more prominent Chinese features. They still did not see her as one of their own. I could care less about meeting people I do not know and who would not accept me, it’s not that serious to me. I did get extremely concerned about the rate of how these Chinese are being given prominence on the Island. It is one thing for them to own businesses but to have them control the roads ( the toll road). Also giving them large land masses. While I understand the country needs better roads and infrastructures, does the Jamaican government thinks the Chinese would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot? I will finish listening to this interview, but I find myself agreeing to everything he has said so far. It is a dangerous position for the leaders to take giving Jamaican resources away to the Chinese for roads and whatever else. It seems like a good reasonable exchange but in the long run the people will suffer.
