JAMAICAN JERK CONTROVERSY

Jamaica is seeking international legal protection for a number of its geographical indications including Jamaica Jerk, following controversy over a product called Punchy Jerk Rice, launched recently in the UK by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

A geographical indication is a sign used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess a reputation or certain qualities that are linked to that place of origin.

Jamaica jerk and Jamaica rum are already protected locally.

Adrienne Thompson, Manager at the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO), said discussions are underway to extend this protection to the UK and the European Union.

British Labour MP Dawn Butler has accused Mr. Oliver of cultural appropriation – the adoption of elements of a minority culture by members of the dominant culture.
