MISSING GUNS SHUT DOWN THE JDF

Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) personnel and visitors were yesterday subjected to extensive searches at its Up Park Camp Headquarters which was locked down for in excess of an hour as officers searched for two M16 rifles.

JDF civil military cooperation officer, Major Basil Jarrett, said an “anomaly” was discovered during a weapons inventory check.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we have confined movement in and out of camp while we complete our system check,” Jarrett said.

A visitor to the compound told The Sunday Gleaner yesterday that he was among several persons who had their vehicles checked around 7 a.m. yesterday, and that he was not allowed to leave the facility until about 9 a.m.

The JDF recently reviewed its weapons protocol after an officer who worked in the armoury reportedly removed a weapon which was later used to kill his girlfriend in Portmore, St Catherine.

The soldier then turned the weapon on himself.

Up to yesterday evening, it was not clear whether the missing weapons had been located.
