MOTHER BURNS SON WITH HOT POT

A woman who got upset and allegedly used a pot to burn her 11-year-old son on his bottom, after he accidentally burnt his two-year-old nephew on his bottom, broke down in tears when she was denied bail this week for the second time in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The 41-year-old accused Annmarie Brown, a dressmaker of Trench Town in Kingston, was on Monday denied bail by Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece following a bail application by Attorney Denise Hinson.

Brown, who is facing charges of cruelty to a child and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, is scheduled to return to court today.

According to allegations, on Juy 27 the complainant was told by his sister to bathe her son. The complainant said that after the bath the child was reportedly passing a coal stove when a pot that was on it burnt the child on his bottom.

The court heard that shortly after, the accused woman was informed of the incident and she reportedly got upset and allegedly told the complainant that she was going to burn him back. It was further alleged that Brown went outside for the hot pot and burnt the complainant on his bottom, causing him to suffer third-degree burns.

The children were taken to the Bustamante Hospital for Children the following day where they were admitted.

On Monday, when the matter was mentioned, the prosecutor told the court that the boy had since been released into his father’s care, and that Brown’s 16 and 17-year-old children have been removed from the house.

Attorney Hinson, during her bail application, told the court that she had seen a photograph of the injury and that the boy’s injury was being exaggerated by the Crown.

Brown was first denied bail last week Thursday. On that occasion Hinson told the court that the 11-year-old boy was a troubled child, and that he had a history of being cruel towards his nephew and had tried to cut off the toddler’s penis on one occasion.
