MOUNTAIN VIEW ON EDGE

The police and military are keeping a close watch on sections of Mountain View Avenue following a flare-up of gang violence on Friday morning.

An unidentified man was killed when rival gang members from Jarrett Lane and Oliver Road began trading bullets shortly after midnight.

The shootout continued for two hours.

Residents claim a second man was fatally shot but this has not been confirmed by the police.

There has been a lull in the violence in the Mountain View Avenue community over the last several weeks.

The security forces have been conducting operations in the area in search of gunmen.

Senior Superintendent Victor Hamilton, head of the Kingston Eastern Police, who spoke with RJR News on Friday afternoon, said while there is now a relative calm in the area, the police is maintaining “a strong” presence in the community.

He said the police attempted to enter the community during the intense gun battle early Friday morning, but this proved challenging because of the “extremely difficult” terrain and the fact that it was dark.

The police later found the body of one man after daybreak.

SSP Hamilton said the police will continue to maintain a presence in the area on Friday night.
