MORE than nine years after the shooting death of a man at his house on Marley Avenue in August Town, St Andrew, a jury has found the man accused of his murder guilty. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said in a release yesterday that the accused, Jason Brown, is to be sentenced on June 2 after the guilty verdict was returned on Thursday.
According to the ODPP, the Crown led evidence that about 1:40 pm on March 14, 2008, Hibbert, his wife and three children were at their home eating lunch, when a man called out to Hibbert, who went into the yard and greeted two men — one of whom was the accused.
Brown, otherwise called ‘Tow Tow’, reportedly asked Hibbert for $1,000 to which Hibbert responded: “Me no deh pon nothing right now”.
The Crown said the other man spun around, took out a handgun and fired at Hibbert. Brown then reportedly took the gun from the other man and fired five shots at the deceased; both men then fled the yard, the ODPP detailed.
Hibbert succumbed to the gunshot wounds and the accused was eventually apprehended by the police on March 31, 2009.
The murder trial commenced on May 1 before Justice Courtney Daye and the court was told that the accused, who would regularly visit the deceased man’s yard, had a father/son relationship with Hibbert.
On Thursday, the jury returned a majority verdict of guilty — six to one — and Brown was remanded.
