Stink takes toll
The unbearable stench of urine and human faeces is now taking its toll on workers at the Portland Parish Library and volunteers at the local Red Cross office.
The perennial problem of turning up for work in the mornings to encounter the stench from overnight deposits of human excretory has now become unbearable. “It is rather unfair to us as human beings,” commented Karen Forrester, a Red Cross volunteer and member.
“This has been happening for the better part of 10 years now, and each morning it is seemingly getting from bad to worst. Persons have no regard for civic pride and, therefore, in the dead of night, they use this area for their sanitary convenience,” she added.
The area referred to by Forrester is a drain that runs from the rear of the Red Cross building to the library, which is also less than 20 metres from the Inland Revenue Department and approximately 100 metres from the National Commercial Bank building and the Port Antonio Post Office.
Frequent complaints from staff at the parish library to the powers that be have seemingly fallen on deaf ears, as the situation remains.
